Vocational Training and Supported Employment

Success in the work world is fulfilling for everyone. At Bancroft, we prepare adolescents and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and acquired brain injuries to do productive work and contribute to their communities. Our range of vocational training and employment opportunities is supported through partnerships with many community businesses. In fact, a Business Advisory Committee, made up of business and community leaders, helps to guide our programming to make sure we are meeting the needs of the local business communities.

Starting at age 14, students in The Bancroft School are beginning to prepare for adult life, through vocational training. Bancroft's Secondary Education Program provides both an academic and vocational training experience for students ages 14 to 21 that is appropriately designed at each child's current functioning level. This allows the student to be reinforced by his/her success in tasks in accordance with state Core Curriculum Standards. The program design allows the student to gradually develop the academic and vocational skills necessary to be successful in post-secondary experiences.

Bancroft adult programs also offer a wide range of day supports, transitional supported employment, and competitive or supported employment for those served in both campus and community settings. Supports are provided based on each person's preferences and capabilities.

Options include:

  1. Internships/Volunteer positions provide opportunities for an individual to gain valuable work experience while preparing him/her to be successful in a workplace setting.
  2. Site-based day training can be focused on a wide range of pre-employment skills such as interpersonal skills, money management, interview preparations, and community integration. These services can be offered in conjunction with a part time job, or as a full time focus for the person served.
  3. Contract Employment offers a group of individuals an opportunity to work together on a project for a company, such as packaging a product. The employees work at a licensed Bancroft site with supervision from Bancroft employment specialists.
  4. Transitional Supported Employment gives those preparing for community jobs the opportunity to learn job related skills while receiving a pay check. Many of these worksites are in the community hosted by local companies and the group is supervised at all times by a Bancroft job coach.
  5. Competitive and Supported Employment helps those supported by Bancroft be successful in full or part-time jobs in local community businesses. Employment specialists work with both the employee and employer. Job training and support is provided based on the needs of the employee (adjusting to changes over time). Sensitivity training and consultation is provided to the employer and co-workers with emphasis placed on the development of natural supports.

With Bancroft's Vocational Training and Supported Employment Services, individuals are better equipped to take their rightful place in the workforce.
