Adult Life Enrichment Programs and Activities
Adults served by Bancroft consistently participate in more community activities than either their disabled or non-disabled peers, helping those we serve to achieve maximum self-sufficiency and fulfillment in their lives. Providing life enrichment opportunities is a key component of that effort.
The Life Enrichment and Recreational Network (L.E.A.R.N.) provides educational, cultural and recreational courses and activities for individuals 18 and older with disabilities (those served by Bancroft NeuroHealth and others). Held in the Cherry Hill, N.J. area, these courses and activities are intended to increase intellectual, physical and socialization skills as well as promote leisure, independence and personal enjoyment through participation.
Participants can choose from a variety of classes in areas such as creative arts, fun and fitness, healthy cooking, hobbies and leisure, musical arts and personal development. Also included in the network are social events, club activities and Special Olympics opportunities.
Individuals are also encouraged to participate actively in the planning of events, make suggestions for classes or establish new opportunities by participating in Bancroft's Recreation Committee for Persons Served.
A significant emphasis is also placed on helping individuals to develop their ability to advocate for themselves. Individuals served are routinely afforded the opportunity to participate in local, regional, state and national self-advocacy activities. The Bancroft NeuroHealth Advisory Committee for Persons Served, which reports directly to the Board of Trustees, represents the interests of all those served within BNH.
Among other opportunities is Joyful Noise, a choir of adults with disabilities that is mentored by a professional choral performer and teacher.
Social skills development and life enrichment is also a major goal of our vocational/day services component, where the primary objective is to provide the adults we serve with meaningful work and/or enrichment opportunities. A great majority of the adults we serve are employed in the community. In addition, many individuals participate in volunteer activities, including Meals on Wheels and other programs.
