Bancroft NeuroHealth’s Fifth Annual Inclusive Ministry Workshop

This workshop is geared toward parish and congregation leaders, priests, rabbis, ministers, choir directors, religious instructors, youth group leaders, and families of people with disabilities.

12:30-1:15 p.m. Registration

1:15-2:15 p.m. – Session I
Rejoicing Spirits Ministry — A Model for Worship Inclusion

Susan Crawford, Program Director, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Exton, PA
Ms. Crawford will share highlights from the “How to Start a Rejoicing Spirits Ministry.” This is an innovative and inclusive ministry that reaches out to enrich the spiritual lives of individuals with developmental disabilities along with their families, friends and local supportive community. The worship service is uplifting with lively music, hand-held instruments in a free, expressive environment.

2:15-2:45 p.m.
Refreshments and Fellowship

This is an informal time to meet new friends, develop contacts and share ideas, concerns, etc. During our time of fellowship there will be a presentation of simulations designed to develop awareness of the learning styles of children and adults with disabilities by Rabbi Judith Abrahamson, Education Resource Specialist, Reconstructionist Rabbinical College; Beth Greer, Technology Specialist at Bancroft NeuroHealth; and Sister Krista Mote, Learning Consultant at Bancroft NeuroHealth.

2:45-3:45 p.m. – Session II
Bringing the Word of God to People with Disabilities

Rev. Aaron Jager, Chaplain, Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat, Wyckoff, NJ
Experience a sample of how a weekly worship service engages the participation of people with severe disabilities, and how the spirituality of each individual is celebrated.

3:45-5:15 p.m. – Session III
Special Needs in Religious Education — Enhancing the Learning Process and Encouraging Appropriate Behavior

Linda Meyer, Ed.D., MPA, adjunct professor at Caldwell College, Caldwell, NJ
Anne Masters, M.A., Director of Pastoral Ministry with Persons with Disabilities, Archdiocese of Newark, NJ
This workshop will provide an overview of how to develop special needs support in religious education within your faith community that includes identifying current best practices for enhancing learning; for example, providing “functional alternatives” for communication and improving behavior.
