Strikes and spares for medals!

Bancroft athletes earned medals in two Special Olympics bowling tournaments last month.

Two adult teams won gold and one earned silver in the State Special Olympics Spring Sports Festival Unified Bowling Tournament on March 27 in Ewing, New Jersey.

And five students placed in the festival's regular bowling tournament on March 28 in Stratford.

The School team's coach, Carol Bober, thanked all the bowling athletes "for another season of laughs, fun, and excitement. "We are all so very proud of this year's team," she said, noting that all participating athletes showed great sportsmanship, had lots of fun, made new friends, and did extremely well in the competition.

For the adults, this competition offered a new twist: It was the first time a Bancroft team has participated in unified bowling -- where athletes compete on teams with staff or community volunteers.

A special thank you to our volunteers, and congratulations to all of our bowlers!
CARF renews accreditation, offers glowing report

The international agency that accredits rehabilitation facilities has issued a report praising Bancroft's Brain Injury Services and Community Employment Services for adults, and continuing accreditation of those programs for three more years - the maximum term. (Bancroft only sought re-accreditation of these programs this year.)

"Bancroft demonstrates a strong commitment to a person-first environment, with a conscious effort to remove barriers to inclusion," wrote CARF in its recent report on Bancroft. "Persons served are treated with dignity and respect."

International expert Rune J. Simeonsson to discuss

new classification system he helped develop for
World Health Organization
May 12, 2010

The system provides universal language for characteristics of children and youth

Global disabilities authority Rune J. Simeonsson, Ph.D., MSPH, will visit Bancroft for two days in May, and speak at our spring Clarence York Lecture on May 12.

Dr. Simeonsson's presentation is especially timely, as he will discuss recent changes to the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning. A professor at the University of North Carolina, Dr. Simeonsson chaired the international working group that developed the revised classification. These important changes represent a new, shared language of child functioning for social, educational, legal and mental health services.

This system offers a universal language for describing the characteristics of children and youth that are important to their growth, health and development. In contrast to medical classifications, the system introduces a new way of thinking by focusing not on diagnoses, but on an individual's functioning -- shifting the emphasis from cause to impact on performance and human activities.

"Attitude change and policy change happen slowly," notes Dr. Simeonsson.

The lecture will be held at the Cherry Hill Public Library on Wednesday, May 12, from 9 a.m. - noon.

CEUs are available for educators.

Celebrating the Music of the Beatles!
The Bancroft School Spring Show

Students from The Bancroft School and staff had great fun presenting their spring show to a packed and enthusiastic audience last week in "Celebrating the Music of the Beatles!" Students did a great job performing a wide variety of Beatles songs with accompanying skits, including "A Hard Day's Night," "Ticket to Ride," "Yellow Submarine" and "All You Need is Love."
Bancroft Classic - Staff raises funds for employee recognition
Great people...great purpose...great games...great fun!

Over 250 people attended this year's Bancroft Classic, a fun-filled event that pits staff teams against each other in wacky competitions to raise money for staff recognition initiatives at Bancroft. Here's a summary of the winners:

Spirit Award(for having the greatest percentage of people attend the event): Community Services for Adults.

First place: The Alpha Dogs (from the Lindens)-- Captain Solomon Blocker and teammates Amyr Hill, Katie Chamberlin, Matt Lasoski, Oliver Moore, Sonam Dubal and Thomas Rhoden. Each player received a $10 Wawa gift card, championship shirt and their team name on the coveted Championship Cup!

Second place: Beat It! (from Education Programs).

Also competing were teams from the Brick Program, Community Services for Adults, Mullica Hill Programs, Pediatric and Adolescent Residential Campus and Community Services, and The Bancroft School at Voorhees Pediatric Facility. The Lindens and Education both had two teams participating.

Thanks to all who participated! Click hereto see pictures from the event.
Urgent: Friendly callers needed
Calling parties to be held Thursday, next week

Here's an opportunity to support Bancroft by sharing your enthusiasm with others. Bancroft's Development Office hosts "calling parties" each quarter, where friends call other families or friends of Bancroft to seek support for our mission. Come enjoy conversation, refreshments and prizes with others, while helping Bancroft!

Volunteers are needed to help follow-up on our recent annual fund letter, which featured Beth Kaiser Thomson, a survivor of brain injury and Bancroft alumna. This extraordinary young woman has worked very hard to overcome great odds, and today enjoys a full life of motherhood, and family. In the letter, Beth describes how she regained control of her life through the support and encouragement of Bancroft - and that such help is made possible through donations to Bancroft's annual fund.

Volunteer callers are needed for the following dates:

  • Wednesday, April 28

  •  Thursday, April 29

All calls will be made in Bancroft offices in Suite 401 of the 800 Kings Highway building in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. A maximum of eight callers are needed each evening. To reserve your spot, please call Michael McLaughlin at (856) 348-1171 or by e-mail to MMclaughlin@bnh.org right away.
Annual golf tournament taking a hiatus

Our Development and Golf Tournament Committees have decided to put the annual golf tournament on a temporary hiatus.

In an effort to position ourselves for the future and meet the needs of the organization and those we serve, which is always our goal and highest calling, we have decided a temporary hiatus will allow us to best utilize our resources to embark on other meaningful and transformative projects.

If you have supported our golf tournament in the past, you will be hearing from us shortly, and we urge you to renew your commitment to Bancroft -- even without a golf event. You will be immediately putting 100% of your gift to work improving our program, services and facilities for the children and adults we serve. You would still be supporting the same important mission -- which can never take a hiatus.

Please contact Joan Galon King, Chief Advancement Officer, at 856-348-1140 for more information or with any questions.
Walk Now for Autism Speaks Awards Reception

And the winner is... Bancroft!

At a recent awards reception, Team Bancroft was recognized by Autism Speaks as a Walk Sponsor, as well as a top fundraising team! Bancroft family, the Wills Family, was also recognized as one of the top fundraising teams, and Thom Hartnett, a Program Manager in Bancroft's Community Vocational Services for Adults program, was recognized as a Grand Club Member for individual fundraising efforts that amounted to at least $1,000.

Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness, research, advocacy and family services for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders. We can all be proud of the impact Bancroft families and staff have made over the years (through these efforts and many others) in the lives of families touched by autism.

This year the South Jersey Walk will be held on Saturday, May 22nd at the Bishop's Gate Corporate Center in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. If you are interested in being a Team Bancroft captain, please contact Deb Conner at (856) 524-7023 or via e-mail at dconner@bnh.org.
