Government Relations.
International
expert lectures at Bancroft on universal language
of
functioning
As
part of the Clarence York Lecture Series, Bancroft
was pleased to host Dr. Rune Simeonsson of the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill last
week. Dr. Simeonsson lectured on the World Health
Organization's efforts to create a universal
language for classifications that recognizes
important areas of human functioning, and defines
them in a standard way internationally. Through
this project, the standards now address each
person's variability beyond a diagnosis and focus
not only on function, but also on participation
and activity.
After
Dr. Simeonsson's presentation, Dr. Dan Keating,
Bancroft vice president, led a panel discussion on
the application of this work to educational and
residential programs for children and adults with
intellectual and developmental disabilities, in
particular. Panelists included the following
Bancroft professional staff: Lori Field, M.Ed.,
Ed.S., NCSP; Sharon Jurman; Dennis Morgan; and
Christina Vorndran, Ph.D., BCBA.
After
the lecture, Dr. Simeonsson spent the next
day-and-a-half touring and meeting with groups of
staff and persons served around the organization.
Dr. Simeonsson spontaneously remarked on how much
the staff genuinely respects the people we serve,
and he was very impressed with the level of
engagement he saw during his tours, according to
Dr. Keating.
The
videotaped lecture will be available for viewing
soon on our website, bancroft.org.

Todd Emmons receives Leadership
Award Congratulations
once again to Todd Emmons, one of our busiest
self-advocates, who just received the Jane Miller
Memorial Leadership Award from The Arc of New
Jersey. Todd accepted the honor at The Arc's
annual networking luncheon for the New Jersey
Self-Advocacy Project and the New Jersey Statewide
Self-Advocacy Network. We are very proud of Todd's
efforts to speak out for himself, as well as for
those who cannot speak out for themselves.

Families
and persons served speak out
Families, staff and persons served attended a
joint legislative hearing of the New Jersey Senate
Health, Human Services, Senior Citizens and New
Jersey Assembly Human Services committees,
regarding a bill that would rebalance funding
resources by reducing the state's reliance on
developmental centers (bill A-1673/S-811,
sponsored by Assemblyman Lou Greenwald).
According to family member Donna Icovino,
"Todd Emmons, self advocate served by Bancroft,
did an outstanding job testifying, as did Lowell
Arye" of the Alliance for the Betterment of
Citizens with Disabilities (ABCD), who represented
community providers, including Bancroft.
ABCD's testimony focused on:
- the ability of its member agencies to serve
people with complex medical and neurological
disabilities in the community
- full funding of the plan "A Path to
Progress"
- the need for community infrastructure
- reinvestment of federal funds into community
services
- calling for the closure of a developmental
center within the next two years
For further details, click on the following
links to both the Assembly Bill A-1673, and ABCD's
full testimony.

Going to the Philadelphia Zoo
by
Peter
Fisher
Following is the latest
installment from "roving reporter" Peter Fisher,
who is served at Bancroft's Flicker Center, a
program for older adults with developmental and
intellectual disabilities and acquired brain
injuries.
Flicker took a day trip to
the Philadelphia Zoo, where we saw the wildlife
and enjoyed a picnic lunch. The weather was nice
and sunny but chilly. Many of the animals were not
out. With three photographers, George Lalka, Ernie
Gabrielle, and myself, we got some beautiful
photos of the giraffes, leopards and the monkeys.
Surprisingly, some tremendously large turtles were
also visible. Everyone who went enjoyed looking at
the animals. It almost seemed like the animals
were also viewing us. The tigers came right up to
the glass like "look at those funny people!" They
are tremendously large but you don't realize until
they are right in front of you! I think the photos
will give you a better idea of the fun than my
words can.

It's
all about RESPECT!
During the development of our new brand (One
World. For Everyone.) last year, the word
"respect" was identified as the essence of who we
are and what we stand for.
Many of us agree that "respect" holds a great
deal of meaning, and that the concept needs to
become even more deeply rooted within the
organization and demonstrated in everything we do.
So, with the support and encouragement of our Core
Values Champions and other staff, Bancroft
recently shifted to a single, overarching Core
Value: "RESPECT."
Moreover, the word RESPECT encompasses an
array of attributes that help define who we are at
Bancroft. Qualities such as...
R
espect E
mpathy S
upport P
ride E
ffectiveness C
onnections T
eamwork
We want to reinforce the message that
respectful behavior is important from every
perspective, and we hope to encourage everyone
associated with Bancroft to demonstrate it
continually around the organization and beyond. In
other words, we want respect to flow both ways
between staff and persons served, staff and family
members, family members and staff, and so
on.
We encourage your ongoing support of our Core
Value, and we welcome your suggestions through our
Communications Office (e-mail
kross@bnh.org). |
Staff Appreciation Festivals: update!
With our annual Staff Appreciation Festivals
right around the corner (June 2 and 9), we have
some exciting news: Over the last few weeks,
Bancroft families have pulled out all the stops
and contributed over $9,000 - an all-time high!
- for the prize drawings for direct-care
staff. Thank you, family
members!
The theme for this year's event is Respect,
our new Core Value (see story above). In fact,
another way for families to show appreciation for
their loved one's staff is to send in a RESPECT
card, acknowledging a particular staffer or group
of employees who show their commitment to those we
serve every day. Click here for an electronic
version of our Family Respect Card, which we hope
you will save and use often.
We hope to see you at our Staff Appreciation
Festivals on June 2 at Challenge Grove in Cherry
Hill (near the Haddonfield campus) and/or June 9
on the Mullica Hill Campus.
To contribute to the prize drawings or for
more information, contact Sue Crouse at (856)
524-7479 or by e-mail at
scrouse@bnh.org. |
